Behold, everyone! Words of wisdom from the cream of the Goon crop.
The last thing a competent and clever spy determined to cause damage would do is apply to GoonWaffe with a character created years ago. A proper spy would begin by joining the Something Awful forums, familiarizing themselves with the hambeasts' insular, self-congratulatory forum culture, and would then proceed to create regular "quality posts" for a period of many months (up to a year or more) in order to ingratiate themselves with the SA community.
This wouldn't be hard to do. Typical SA forum threads, humor projects (such as their themed image "contests" or someone photographing each step of a zany science experiment), and front-page articles are less interesting and humorous than 1980s-era The Far Side calendars, while also managing to be less relevant than The Onion. I'm being generous.
The try-hard factor of Something Awful is truly a wonder of the Internet. Suffering through such nonsense just to gain the Goons' acceptance and sabotage them in a computer game would require real dedication.
Next, the potential spy must appear to have learned about the Goons' involvement in EVE naturally, as though it were any other game mentioned on their forums (which, to a genuine new SA poster, it would be). This would be the most delicate part of the process, and a light touch would be ideal. He may not even discuss EVE on the SA forum at all before applying.
Once accepted, time, patience and actual social/manipulative skills would be required to inflict significant damage to the Goons. As a group, Goons actually are fairly bright people. In fact, as EVE players, I like them. I hate their forums, but as a bunch of dorky hambeasts playing a computer game, they're all right.
Point is though, all this paranoid garbage and fuss about small-time awoxers and intel-passers is just that, garbage and fuss. It won't save you from a smart, dedicated spy or a disgruntled (or bored) turncoat. |
